What Just Eat, Deliveroo and Uber Eats really cost a Stockport takeaway
Updated 16 September 2026 · 5 min read
Percentages hide how much money actually leaves your business. Here is the same thing in pounds, using the published rates for the big three apps.
The published rates
- Just Eat: around 14% plus VAT if you deliver, around 30% plus VAT if they deliver
- Uber Eats: around 13% for self-delivery or collection, around 30% with their riders
- Deliveroo: not published, but widely reported at roughly 14% to 16% self-delivery and 25% to 35% with riders
On a £20 order
At 14%, the app takes £2.80 and you keep £17.20. At 30%, the app takes £6 and you keep £14. VAT on the commission is charged on top, so the real figures are higher again.
To still receive £20 after commission, you would have to charge about £23.30 at 14%, or about £28.60 at 30%. That is why menu prices on the apps are often higher than in the shop.
Over a month
Take 400 orders a month at £22 each, which is £8,800 of food. Commission at 14% is £1,232. At 30% it is £2,640. That is before VAT on the commission, before any promotion you have opted into, and before card fees.
What you can do about it
- Deliver your own orders where you can. Self-delivery rates are roughly half the rider rates.
- Put your own ordering link on your packaging, receipts and social media.
- Check what promotions you are enrolled in. Discounts usually come out of your margin, not theirs.
- Compare against a flat fee. Above a certain number of orders, a fixed monthly cost is always cheaper.
Is VAT charged on Just Eat commission?
Yes. Commission is quoted excluding VAT, so a 14% rate costs 16.8% of the order value once VAT is added.
How much is commission on a £20 order?
About £2.80 at 14% and £6 at 30%, plus VAT on that commission.
Do customers pay fees as well?
On most apps, yes: service fees and delivery fees are added at checkout. On SK Feast there is no service fee, and delivery is whatever the takeaway sets.
